I suggest watching the DVD series of the 2000-2002 BBC program, "A History of Britain" (by Simon Schama).  The first half of the 11th session (titled 'The Wrong Empire') describes the reason behind the fracturing of the Empire, the loss of the American colonies.

Schama deliberately sets the American Revolution in precise context.  The colonists were the inheritors of a core English tradition, which had somehow been lost in the motherland.  Watching the series up to that point will set context for historian Schama's description.

(My suggestion is solely about what America was 250 years ago.  It has nothing to do with where America "is" today.)

Perhaps if we strive greatly, we can turn this country into something more like that shining city on a hill so admired by Progressives: Somalia.
