Good morning. I took the day off. But needless to say, no big plans. I mean, does anyone have big plans right now?

Today I'm trying to reconstruct excise tax records from the early seventeenth century while I'm at mom's in the guise of my Slovenian alter-ego, Stepan Fečic.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 1: Friday my main software tool crashed hard, corrupted a work directory and lost work. I shut down and unplugged for the weekend. Now I back at it replicated the problem... that makes it a bug, composed and set a lengthy email with screen shots, log files and detailed descriptions and telling them how their software is costing time and money. And six projects are waiting for me to provide stuff for them to get going. Working on the backlog of items, getting a software engineer up to speed on the database so he can help out on that side and selecting items to send to a sub-contractor to help get through the back log. Bring up new systems is always interesting. Other than that... nope no plans.

Just waiting to see how long it takes for me to run out of bandwidth using my phone's hot spot. My network service sucks beyond recognition.

The software shouldn't be so sensitive, but I'm running remote client interfaces across an encrypted VPN. My network speed is fine, I'm just wondering of the latency at either end is the issue.... gotta figure out a way of testing that theory.

Reply to JCM in 7: I finally got around to ordering a 5T external hard drive. My laptop is so full, it's causing problems with Zoom and my applications are running like frozen molasses. It should be here tomorrow with free Prime shipping. Damn, Amazon is amazing.

FINALLY! Wife was being a squeaky wheel and now we have a pediatrician appointment for next month. Hopefully we can get some much needed assistance with the Squire. Things have been rough for the past little while.

Reply to vxbush in 8: Looking like latency.... between a DB Admin, our IT guy and a FAE (Field Application Engineer). Between the VPN and the encryption requests between the client and database time out. The preliminary solution is for us eCAD people working remote is to put computers in the office right on the same internal net as the database server. Remote in to the computer, than way latency between the client and database is minimized. We'll have the screen lag due to remoting in but not the client / server latency.

is this for something recent and acute, or just kind of the ongoing issues?

Reply to JCM in 14: Out Client / Server latency over VPN is 30ms. Remoting in to an office machine the Client / Server latency is 2ms.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 13: Stiller has the perfect voice for this story. It manages to both send up the Old Left and view it with a certain affection at the same time. Having grown up with echoes aplenty of the Old Left---my mother's parents met at a Socialist convention in 1918, and while my grandfather got over that long ago, my grandmother stayed with it, and my mother too---I find it very moving.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 16: The ongoing issues. He's going on five but is more at a two/three year old level. Been waiting since last April/August for an appointment. He needed a fully dedicated Education Assistant while he was in school. Lack of diagnosis made it difficult for the school to secure funding even though it was obvious he wasn't at the same level as his classmates.
We finally got him almost fully potty trained this past month as well.

Listening to Trump's press conference. I swear, there ought to be a requirement for every journalist to pass the U.S. citizenship test before they can report on anything other than the entertainment industry and high school sports.

Reply to doppelganglander in 22: I've decide there is no such thing as a stupid question... until a reporter asks it. My peeve last night on the media.... COVID case are increasing! Referring to TOTAL number of cases. Of course cases are increase you air head twits. If we have one case yesterday and one case today they are increasing. What matters is the RATE! How many new cases today compare to yesterday, and every day for the last to months, THAT IS THE IMPORTANT "THING"! The rate is decreasing. At the same time reported cases are going down... Testing is going up! Which means compared to a few weeks ago we are finding more asymptomatic people. But do we ever see a diagnosed case to tested people rate? Nope. Stuff which is brain dead simple to research and calculate. Will a reporter do it? Nope.... too busy with the bash Trump walking orders.

By the way, I assume we are already for the Democrats to complete the entire 360° of their pivot, from “Trump is a fear mongering racist“ for ordering limited travel bans in late January/ early February; to their current “we were in favor of lockdown all along, why didn’t Trump declare martial law three months ago like we wanted? Because he stupid, that’s why!“; To the upcoming “we always knew the quarantine was excessive, but Trump wanted it because he’s literally Hitler!“.
