In yesterday's #15 Occasional Reader said: I'm not sure what you mean by that. Well, Obama had feelings for his grandmother, but threw her under the bus. I figured our supposed terrorist wasn't loved by too many, and therefore throwing him over the bus was the approach. In short, the media would get him out of the headlines as soon as possible.
And happiest of birthdays, buzz!

Happy Birthday Buzz! Where's the breakfast birthday cake? I don't know if that's a thing or not, but it should be. It could be if it were a coffee cake. Maybe just stick a little candle in the middle of that biscuit. just not 70 of them.

Thanks to everyone for their birthday wishes/greetings! As I mentioned last night, this storied day in history is not merely the anniversary of my birth, but of the day Lincoln was shot; the day the Titanic hit the iceberg; and the day of the first major Dust Bowl dust storm. I keep looking at the number "70," and asking, "How the hell did I get here?"

“This is a historic moment for weapons systems. For the first time, an energy-based weapons system actually works," Brig.-Gen. Yaniv Rotem said.

Finally got around to filing my taxes. I did all the basic math in February but just kept putting off the actual filing. I had $0 W2 income. Even so, thanks to $53 in royalties and alimony, I ended up having to fill out seven forms. This is absurd.

Reply to JCM in 11: I mean, right? Meanwhile the money came through on the sale of Mom's place in Florida -- only about 72 hours late. As of 10:00 this morning it looked as if the deal was going to fall through.

Tomorrow I celebrate(?) my release from wage slavery, until I find another position. Will have to go in to turn in equipment, badge, etc. I'm interviewing for other positions there, but they won't start immediately.

perhaps the good brigadier general is engaging in a bit of hyperbole? I am under the impression that the United States has already carried out several working tests of laser weapon systems.

I believe the difference is this system is deployable, or close to it; not just an experiment.

Interesting, possibly breakthrough if it is scalable. A new heat engine with no moving parts is as efficient as a steam turbine Engineers at MIT and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have designed a heat engine with no moving parts. Their new demonstrations show that it converts heat to electricity with over 40 percent efficiency — a performance better than that of traditional steam turbines. The heat engine is a thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cell, similar to a solar panel’s photovoltaic cells, that passively captures high-energy photons from a white-hot heat source and converts them into electricity. The team’s design can generate electricity from a heat source of between 1,900 to 2,400 degrees Celsius, or up to about 4,300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fun with NPR.
1) In an interview with some "expert" regarding the new Russian commander in Ukraine, this lady decries the use by Russian forces in Syria (under this same general) of (among other things) thermobaric weapons. She then adds, "thermite is designed to melt steel, so you can imagine what it can do to the human body." Um, thermite and thermobaric weapons are two entirely different things.
2) In a piece about "risky, unregulated financial arrangements for buying houses" (e.g. rent-to-own), the NPRite intones, "and a study has found that one in five people who use these arrangements are disproportionately people of color." Um... what? if that garbled sentence was supposed to mean that one in five people who use these arrangements are "people of color", and that's disproportionate, well... that's correct, in a way. It's disproportionately low. Very much so. The white population of the US is about 60%. Assuming everyone else is "people of color", well...

Reply to Occasional Reader in 23: And if "people of color" are more likely to use rent to own, that might be because their income does not let them do better. Maybe if they had gone to charter schools where they would actually learn something instead of union schools.... So this could be a good thing; giving them a path to own a home.
