New book review in the book reviews forum - A Raid on the Red Sea: The Israeli Capture of the Karine A

A real life spy, military, and political story

And again, with this week's breakast pics, I'm getting strong Vacation Envy.

In other news:  I went out for a walk in my (formerly?) safe neighborhood at about 10:30 last night, and heard... gunshots.   Two very quick pops, followed by 4 more, of a different pitch, like it was two different weapons.  It sounded like it was "off yonder"  to the southeast, but not that far, either.  watied for a bit, wondered if I should call 911, but figured I had nothing useful to tell them; "I"m not sure if they were gunshots, and no clear idea from where".  I walked a little more, then a police car drove up, the driver asked me if I'd heard anything, I told him what I'd heard and pointed the direction; at that moment, a guy appeared walking from that direction toward us, waving his arms frantically; the cops drove over to him.  I think he had dialed 911, I heard him telling him "I was out walking my dog when..."

A bit later, there was a swarm of police cars in the area; this is a half mile or less from where I live.

Homicide is up double-digits in this city 2021 vs. 2020; carjackings, triple-digits.

#BlackLivesMatter?

I was just re-watching the movie last night, as it happens.  (Before I took my Mogadishu-flavored evening walk.)

You would think that if the Democrats REALLY cared about the black neighborhoods and black families that they would stop working with the gangs and instead push to have heavy police coverage of these areas along with development partnerships and real friendships with the religious leaders of the communities or the ones who know where all the action is. They would start holding people accountable for their actions.

But instead, we get platitudes and the veneer of caring.

"It is absolutely an ideological and intellectual crime against Black people to even think about defunding the police."

At least where I live, the gunfire is from an Army Reserves training area. Automatic fire (bursts, usually), and occasionally larger booms.

A few years ago, a few MV-22's flew by. Unique noise from those birds.

I think it's time to dust this one off:

A Modern Liberal Democrat
---with apologies to Gilbert & Sullivan

I am the very model of a modern liberal Democrat
I've spread out 'cross the nation from my native campus habitat
I know our shabby history of policies discriminate
And think we should apologize from now until the infinite

I look upon myself as a citizen international
I think restricting entry of illegals is irrational
I take care always to show elevated moral attitude
And speak with unimpeachable political correctitude

And speak with unimpeachable political correctitude
And speak with unimpeachable political correctitude
And speak with unimpeachable political correcti-rectitude

Though not myself religious I will talk of spirituality
I worship at the shrine of income and gender equality
I support racial set-asides, preferences, and bureaucrats
I am the very model of a modern liberal Democrat

He supports racial set-asides, preferences, and bureaucrats
He is the very model of a modern liberal Democrat

I reject the notion that Al-Qaeda wants to form a Caliphate
We'd rapidly end differences if we would just negotiate
I think we should do more to prevent other nations' genocide
But if we use our military I'll support the other side

I second-guess every decision strategic and tactical
I support our troops in every way, as long as it's not practical
Our army should not engage in perilous foreign adventure
So I oppose on principle each new defense expenditure

So I oppose on principle each new defense expenditure
So I oppose on principle each new defense expenditure
So I oppose on principle each new defense expend-expenditure

I think that women should have choices when they're faced with pregnancy
But there is one choice over others I view preferentially
In short, supporting set-asides, preferences, and bureaucrats
I am the very model of a modern liberal Democrat

In short, supporting set-asides, preferences, and bureaucrats
I am the very model of a modern liberal Democrat

In fact, when I have shed my nostalgic dreams of revolution
When I know government's the problem more than the solution
When I realize there's no way that we can fund Social Security
With so much of our population having reached maturity

When I have learnt taxation doesn't create private sector jobs
When I stop using tax grants as a way to buy votes from the mob
In short, when I have shorn some of my more blatant hypocrisies
You might actually see me begin to support democracy

You might actually see me begin to support democracy
You might actually see me begin to support democracy
You might actually see me begin to support democra-mocracy

For the economic knowledge which I've clung to from my early teens
Says, "To each who wants it must come from each person who has got the means"
And so, supporting set-asides, preferences, and bureaucrats
I am the very model of a modern liberal Democrat

And so, supporting set-asides, preferences, and bureaucrats
I am the very model of a modern liberal Democrat

I saw one in flight for what IIRC is my very first time, last weekend near NAS Patuxent River (MD).

Noisy, yes, and that's a disadvantage.  I've long noticed that in contrast to Hueys, Blackhawks are (relatively speaking) on top of you before you hear them.  (Hueys, you can hear coming from miles away, even if they're not blaring "Ride of the Valkryies" from speakers.)

OTOH, the Osprey is fast

Here in Podunk, Nowheresville gunfire is quite common, people sighting their guns or hunting for whatever is in season.  The sound of gun shots would never elicit a 911 call.  Well, maybe at 2:00am, but it's usually pretty quiet around here at that hour.  There's a better chance you'd run into a bear on Main Street than a shooter at that hour.

In-N-Out calls out 'offensive' vaccine mandate after location shut down

WASHINGTON (TND) — West Coast burger chain In-N-Out is publicly calling out officials trying to shut a San Francisco location down for not checking the vaccination status of its patrons.

In-N-Out reportedly sent a statement to ABC 7 News in San Francisco indicating the burger chain would “refuse to become the vaccination police for any government.”

It was "appointment television" for me in college.

Out of curiosity, I caught an episode one one of these "old reruns" channels a few years ago; and it seemed rather cringe-worthy.  I do recall it having some good moments, though.

And to go to Lucius's original reference here; yes, I remember the episodes in which (allegedly) wise-but-tough police captain Frank Furillo would hold gang "summits",  to work out "treaties".  The idea that this sort of thing was the best a city could do to manage its (inevitable) decay was prevalent then; and then it wasn't; and now it is again.

I'm glad they're doing this; and I'm also grumpilly registering my irritation at the continued mainstreaming of the dumb-Millennial expression "calling out" (used in this context).

Howard.

In fairness, they did have his character evolve and become more sympathetic; although it was by having him become more touchy-feely (as in an ep where he talks a suicidal woman off a rooftop), rather than any admission that he may be right about the need to use force against gangsters.
