Cold and gray.  Say what you will about snow, but at least it's pretty.  Southern wet cold gray winter is the pits.

Morning everyone. Have a bunch of stuff to do today related to my mom. Hopefully things work out the way I want them.

In the meantime, found this fascinating paper on making transparent wood easily and "cheaply"

Excellent dissection of the vicious hit piece the Times published on Jordan Peterson.  The end neatly encapsulates the psychopathy of the left:

Is Aitkenhead so defined by the most fatuous and ethically perverse kind of leftist ideology that she’s capable of finding an appealing rebelliousness in a savage monster like Tony but can only be outraged by an extraordinarily sensitive and gentle soul who speaks eloquently about personal responsibility and who openly strives to practice it, even when times are toughest? Does Peterson’s day-to-day struggle to be a better husband, father, friend, teacher, neighbor, and fellow citizen strike too close to home for this woman who wrote a book about her struggle to find the best tab of Ecstasy? Does she experience his very life, which has been focused for decades on helping other people to be better human beings, as a personal rebuke to her own life, which for a long time, anyway, was by her own account focused on the most puerile kind of self-indulgence? Has his determination to dig deeper and deeper into himself, in a preternatural attempt to comprehend, to correct, and to cultivate, shamed her own chronic superficiality?

How else to explain someone who, having lived for ten years with an odious thug like Tony, manages to see Jordan Peterson, of all people, as an embodiment of toxic masculinity?
Or is Aitkenhead, when you come right down to it, just one more supremely callous – indeed, sociopathic – left-wing hack who will destroy anyone to get a juicy story? Maybe it’s really just that. Let’s face it: when you look at what the New York Times and The Washington Post have been doing every day for the last few years, why should any of us be surprised that the Times of London is capable of running a surpassingly disingenuous profile of someone whose greatest offense is being a good man?

I hate hospitals. Need to be made an "essential" visitor. Have to talk to the nursing station. They don't answer the fucking phone! Pointless it seems.

Since I’m too lazy to click the link at the moment, who is “Tony“? But yes, that Author has very concisely summarized the rot at the soul of the leftist cultural “elite“.

Tony was a coke dealer and gangster that the author of the original Times piece left her husband for.  A thoroughly despicable human being.  Aitkenhead also wrote a book chronicling her world-wide search for the perfect tab of ecstacy.

But of course.

seriously, what the hell is wrong with these people? I am far from perfect, but at least I don’t exalt that kind of monstrous dysfunction as being some sort of life goal.

If you are using Chrome, no picture. On Firefox, there is a nice breakfast spread.

Chrome won't show http (not secure) content on a page that uses https (secure) for security reasons, as this is often used to do cross-site scripting, where code from one site gets connected to another (say a hacker and a banking page)

For this site, no problem, but it is a browser setting (person viewing), not a server setting.

I use Chrome for this site, so if I try to post an image that doesn't have an https version, it won't show up and I'll use a different image.

That's the left. They can't argue on facts, or discuss opinions. Anyone not on their side is evil.

It is effectively the policy already.

They're going to have to tax drug dealers and burglars once their tax base moves out.

Oh fucking lovely. This year is trying it's damnedness to top last year. Mom was moved from her room to a separate room and put into isolation. Her roommate apparently tested positive for Covid. No one can reach her today because they don't have a working phone in the room. Oh, and no visitors are allowed. Found that out before I found out about the reason for the move.

I am so sorry, I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.  Maybe you could get her an inexpensive cell phone so you could at least communicate that way.  I haven't been able to visit my husband since March of last year.  He is in assisted living and they don't want visitors unless it's an end of life type visit and it's not covid.  I drop treats and supplies off for him and we talk on the phone every day or more.  It hasn't been easy for either of us.  He's had one shot and I've also had my first shot.  I so hope the vaccine works.

I think the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party have a lot to answer for. Their ancestors must be very upset at them.

Unfortunately, we aren't going to see the pushback on China they deserve. The Big Guy can't be expected to break Hunter's rice bowl.

So far, the Israeli experience with the vaccine is that it is quite effective; I've seen results of 0.04% to 0.6% get COVID. Compare that to the flu vaccine where if 30% get the flu, they're doing well.

Thanks for the vaccine information.

In other news, I hear Hunter Biden is coming out with a book in early April.  Folks are buying it in advance.

So when will buying it and carrying it around like Mao's little red book become mandatory?

(BTW, I do have a copy of Mao's book, but for educational purposes, not because I think he was right. And I got it back when I was a lot younger. Used to be a commie bookstore near Hahvahd Squah. Now they all are commie bookstores.

I finally got a complicated Rust (the language Firefox is written in) example working - the online book gives an example of a struct that caches a value, and has you extend it.

Extending it to handle different values was easy. But when I got to extending it to take generics - that is, the value could be of different types - it got very difficult, with error messages that suggested a fix that gave you a different error message suggesting removing that change.

But it works now! So my computer language skills aren't rusty.

I've been having bad dreams about the woke inquisition and the idiots running things.

Bad when one dream had me back in time with people Hitler was trying to kill (and then we were saved by people from the future)

Then last night two dreams that you'd physically disappear for questioning what was going on, or being smart enough to realize it.

And the people running it? The people who would disappear anyone who figured out what was going on or smart enough to do so? You could tell them by their Hitler mustaches.

No wonder I wake up tired
